It is my impression that Margaret and Rebecca could probably share leadership of the discussion. You two can discuss that situation.  I just wanted to get this info out so that people have a chance to read what must be a very gripping book according to Rebecca and Beth.

Change for May Reading

My Antonia by Willa Cather at the home of Margaret L., led by Rebecca B.There are many copies in the library, including electronic copies.  And I bought mine at Half-Price Books store for under $3, and there were lots of copies there as well.

 

So we need a book for June. In reviewing the list of some of the books that we didn't choose  in January, I think I've spotted a good one.  Doerte recommended a book by Camilla Gibbs (Most of us have read and loved Gibb's Sweetness in the Belly). It's got a great title, great author, and great recommender: The Beauty of Humanity Movement. It's 320 pages. There are 6 available on the library shelves... also electronic version and 2 audio books from the library.  It is pretty cheap used from amazon.com, half.com, and ebay (80 cents to $3.88). More expensive at powells.com.

 

There were a couple of other books mentioned yesterday that I didn't write down. If someone wants to check our their availability and add them to the potential list, do that this week and then we can vote via email.  This will most likely be led by Margaret Leeds at Rebecca's house, June 1, so Margaret can have several votes! And Doerte could weigh in on this since she may be the only one who has read it.  

 

And finally, Betty Lynn read the January selection for next year about Hedy Lamarr and nixed it; she doesn't think we will like it, so let's let it go.

April meeting: Encountering God

Friday, April 13 is our next book club (we decided not to meet on Good Friday.) Susan will lead us in the discussion of Diana Eck's book Encountering God.

 

1. I think that pretty soon, like right away, you need to decide IFyou are going to read the book. It isn't fast reading by any means, but it is thought-provoking. Eck traces her spiritual journey experiencing different religious traditions; she also traces this question in the broader terms of culture and religion. (Christians, Muslims, Jews all worship one God...is it the same God? Is it the same God Hindus worship in many forms?) I am challenging myself to read at least 10 pages a day.Hey, it's Lent, and we do discipline, right?

 

2. So, if you decide to commit to reading the book, then you will have to get a little pro-active about finding the book pretty quickly. Robin has the library's ONLY copy, but will be returning it when she gets her own so she can take notes in it (which as a librarian she hates, but as a reader she feels compelled to do.) You can get this as a used book on www.ebay.com for about $1, at www.half.com and www.amazon.com for about $3, and at www.powells.com for about $10...plus postage on all the above.

 

3. I really am hoping Margaret will be available to join us (missed you this week). I know your Baha'i perspective will be a wonderful contribution.
